Benefits - Active Members
REFUND OF CONTRIBUTIONS
If a member resigns or is terminated from government
service and wishes to withdraw his/her contributions from
GERS, the following documents are required for processing
before any disbursement of funds:
- Application for Refund of Contributions · Copy of
Letter of Resignation, Dismissal, etc.
- Last Two Check Stubs
- Photo Identification
- Resignation or Termination NOPA or termination or
separation letter from agencies that do not process
NOPA's
All applications must be completed in full. If any
important information is missing within the application, it
will be returned to the employee for completion. Any change
in address from the initial application must come from the
member, in writing and signed by the member along with a
picture ID. Applications will not be accepted with
white-outs or scratch outs.
Upon receipt of all required documentation, there is a
processing period of approximately six to eight weeks from
the date of the application to allow for thorough research
within our office.
This process consists of:
Reviewing of records for last payment date of
contributions posted
Research of members file from our record room
Requesting of loan payoff from our Loan Division
Processing of Vouchers
Please Note:
- If a member has at least ten years of credited service
and is not yet at the age to qualify for a retirement
annuity, no refund will be processed. The annuity can be
applied for when the appropriate age is attained (age 50
for a reduced annuity or age 60 with no
reduction).
- If a member has at least ten years working with the
Government but has paid contributions for less than the
ten years, no refund is processed because contributions
can be paid to receive full service credit.
- If the member has at least ten years of credited
service and a delinquent loan was deducted from the
contributions, leaving less than ten years of credited
service, no refund is processed as the amount applied to
the loan may be repaid in order to regain the credited
service.
- Notwithstanding the above, in accordance with a
December 28, 2004 directive by the GERS Board of
Trustees, until such time as the Board makes a different
determination, past practice determines that members who
are not presently eligible for a Retirement Annuity, by
reason of years of service and age, at the time of
separation from Government service, may be refunded
their accumulated contributions upon submission to the
GERS of an application for same.
The law provides for interest to be paid on
contribution refunds at a rate of 4% of total contributions.
Title 3 Chapter 27 Section 713 (a) (June 2000).
