Clarification Regarding Computer Glitch/Payroll Deduction Issue with GERS Loan Payments

(Friday, April 24, 2015)
GERS Administrator/CEO, Austin L. Nibbs, would like to clarify that the technical glitch which resulted in GERS loan payments not being deducted from members April 2 and April 16, 2015 paychecks was an issue directly related to the Department of Finances’ payroll system, MUNIS and not the GERS V3 System.

Noting that when new loans are recorded or when loans are refinanced, there is a cut-off date for GERS to enter information into MUNIS so that the deductions can be included in the appropriate payroll cycle.  Accordingly, GERS staff appropriately entered the information into MUNIS, but when attempting to enter the information into the system for the April 30 payroll cycle, it was noticed that the entries for April 2 and April 16 did not exist. As a result, a call to the Department of Finance’s Payroll Division was made and at which time, GERS was advised that there was an issue with the MUNIS system.

Further, Mr. Nibbs would like to set the record straight regarding statements reported in the Tuesday, April 21, 2015 Virgin Islands Daily News.  Contrary to what was reported, when asked about the “technical glitch”, Mr. Nibbs stated, “each time I tried to respond, the reporter cut me off and would not allow me to finish my statement; it was at that point that I hung up the phone.”

The purpose for GERS issuing the press release was to inform members about the issue; thereby allowing them to act on it in a timely manner. We would like to thank those members who came in to our office to make their payments and would like to encourage those who have not done so as yet, to do so.  Staff from both the GERS and the Department of Finance are in communication and are working feverishly to resolve the matter.

Again, we apologize for any inconvenience caused and ask that you contact our Loans Division at 776-7703 or 718-5480 with any questions or concerns you may have.
