Military Service Credit

In accordance with Title 3, Section 704, sub-section (d) (1) of the Virgin Islands Code, any employee shall be entitled to credited service, up to a maximum of 3 years, for all military service in the Armed Forces of the United States, including the army, navy, marines or coast guard, merchant marine, air force or any auxiliary thereof, either by enlistment or induction. Provided, that such employee must have been a bona fide Virgin Islands resident prior to entering military service.

Please be advised that members of the Employees’ Retirement System of the Government of the Virgin Islands (GERS) will not receive credit for military service unless the system receives retirement contributions payments from the employer and employee.

In order to receive credited service you must complete and submit an Estimated Earnings During Military Service Form (RI 20-97) to the appropriate payment center, along with a copy of your DD214.  Response usually takes up to 8 weeks. Upon receipt of the completed form, the GERS will compute your years of service to include the additional years of service and the contributions due for the service period.  If an urgent response is necessary, the military requires that you state the reason.    Please visit our office to retrieve a copy of the Estimated Earnings During Military Service Form or you may download it from this website.

NOTE:  The payment center cannot provide estimated earnings unless a copy of your DD214 is attached.
